Live in the Tank

Genesis Owusu is an ARIA Award–winning Ghanaian–Australian musician and artist based in Canberra. His albums Smiling with no teeth and Struggler have both received critical acclaim and he has traversed the globe with his band featuring guitarist Kirin J Callinan, bassist Touch Sensitive and drummer Tim Commandeur. On his latest album, which debuted at number four on the ARIA charts, Owusu takes on elements of post-punk, post-rap and R’n’B and layers these through incisive lyrics intent on challenging an oppressive power structure and reclaiming agency over one’s survival.

In 2023 Genesis Owusu presented a sell-out performance at the Sydney Opera House with a forty-piece orchestra, before winning Album of the Year, Best Independent Release and Best Hip Hop/Rap Release at the 2023 ARIA Awards. Having shared stages with the likes of Tame Impala, Paramore and Bloc Party, Owusu’s performance at Volume will be informed by his experiences from his international tours as well as contemporary visual arts. He will present an exclusive new work featuring experiential performative moments as well as songs from his extended catalogue.
